Default New player, old, fat and confused.

Hello everyone.

Well I have just taken the plunge and purchased Guild Wars after playing WoW for about 6 weeks ( and slowly getting bored with it and annoyed at the insane gankage going on ). Obviously the two games are similar but completely different at the same time.

Running around what I believe to be the noob area I have been impressed by the graphics ( the game looks wonderful ) and the apparent ease of play. My first impressions have been that not a lot of people actually talk to each other. Now, I am one of those "older" players, and as such I dont talk l337 and so on. I was wondering if there are any other mature players out there who I could get chatting with and start questing with etc.

My character name is Renthar Strongarm and right now I am halfway to lvl 2 . I would like a bit of RP also but I am not sure if there's any in the game as I have not seen any yet.

Right then, off to read the Lore manual and have a beer.

All the best to you.

PS, why the hell cant I jump?

PPS, Maybe I should have made a forum account with my chars name...told you I was old

Actually, Wazzer, it makes sense that you didn't make an account using your in-game "name", because eventually you'll have FOUR in-game names and nobody will know which you're talking about anyway.

On an actual game note, what exactly are you confused by? I jumped right in to GW after giving up on CoH, EQ2, the MxO closed and open betas, and then WoW. None of them are any good, in my opinion, and while Guild Wars isn't awesome it IS actually fun, as opposed to the long level/skill/point grind and lousy creation system offered by those other games.

Are you stuck in "noob-ville"? My advice? Run all over the place in town and look for people with a green exclaimation over their heads: this means they're offering a quest. Use "L" to open your Quest menu and remind yourself just what the heck you're doing, then run all over the place and do your quests. It's pretty simple and straightforward and it's supposed to be - GW is about getting to 20 in a couple of weeks (for us normal players) or a couple of days (for the hardcore kids without jobs or families ) and then min/maxing for PVP, which sounds lame but is actually awesome - there are so many class/skill combinations that it seems like I rebuild for almost every PVP encounter!

Anyway, best to you, and by the way - you can't jump for the same reason that you can't fall off of a cliff - it's for your own good

Welcome to a wonderful game. I have been playing RPG games since the old Atari days, and this by far can be the best of them all if you allow it. Take your time though.........so many folks are in such a rush, they miss not only the wonder of the land before them, but manny of the missions and quests that pull you into the story.........along the way, there will be twists and turns, and you very well could find yourself caring for the good folks of Ascalon, and what has befallen them. Also, I lead a small Guild if you are interested in joining. I use the same name as on here. We are comprised of mainly older players, and just enjoy ourselves both in game, and helping others.

I came from WoW too and have to admit people are a lot less social in this game. Trying to get a group together is like trying to lead a horse to water...you can't ever get them to drink. It is the only unfortunate thing about this game, as I really enjoy playing with others even if it is not "needed" to do the quest. Later you will find that you can use NPC henchpeople to help you out, not as fun as playing with real players I know. I would try to get with a guild as soon as possible but also make sure you are joining the right one for you. Good luck!

EDIT: My tip for finding a guild is make sure that you ask about the attitude first. If you want to be the #1 pvp guild don't join an easy-going guild and if you just want to get too heavy into pvp don't pick a one that is aimed for that. Also make sure you get to know a few people first!

Thanks for the replies guys, it's appreciated.

I know that there are 3 server locations for the game, and as I am from the UK I am on the Europe location. Now there does not seem to be many people speaking english here and I was wondering where the UK player should play? Do they join the US server?

As for taking my time there's no problem there. I do not intend to rush through the lvl's like you need to do in WoW to remain competitive.

Everyone speaks english on the US servers so if that is a concern to you I would try switching. You get to switch servers 5 times, if you don't like it you can always switch back.
